CMST& 210 Interpersonal Communication
CMST& 210 – Interpersonal Communication – provides insight into communication that occurs in personal relationships. The course reviews the purpose and methods of interpersonal communication in order to better understand and control communication behavior, and thus more effectively manage communication outcomes in interpersonal relationships.
Students who successfully complete the class will be able to:
- Identify interpersonal communication vocabulary for self, perception, conflict, verbal communication, nonverbal communication, listening, conflict, and relationships.
- Summarize how and why humans communicate interpersonally.
- Compare and contrast interpersonal communication choices.
- Evaluate the communication process in interpersonal contexts.
- Model competent (appropriate, effective & ethical) interpersonal communication.
Interpersonal Communication Research Project
The Interpersonal Communication Research Project is an opportunity for students to investigate a topic of their choice regarding interpersonal communication. The project follows a scaffolded set of assignments designed to build towards a short, APA-style original research project including:
- developing a research question or hypothesis
- conducting a literature review
- designing a survey to investigate their research question or hypothesis using selection and rating scale questions
- sampling a population with the survey
- analyzing their data and results
- discussing the interpretation of their findings
- writing a report to APA format of introduction and literature review, method, results, and discussion
